Ease the Pressure of School: How to Minimise School Stress

Is school the last place you’re excited about? Does everything about school seem to dampen your mood, especially when exam week approaches? Try some of these tips to help you get motivated at school and reduce the stress brought on by upcoming exams or endless homework.

1. Motivate Yourself Every Day

If you wake up on the wrong side of the bed, it tends to stay with you throughout the day. So try to keep calm in the morning and motivate yourself to go to school, seeing it as an opportunity to help you achieve your goals as well as form lasting friendships.

2. Participate in Class

It is easy to get bored in class if you don’t participate. Try to make the most of your time by asking questions about the latest material covered in class or even the homework. Also, listen attentively and try to absorb the information while you jot down your notes.

3. Take Down Notes

Taking notes in class forces you to pay attention and helps you stay focused. It also helps you learn the material for future assessments – studies have shown that listening and summarising what you hear by taking notes helps you understand a topic better and remember the information later on.

4. Read Ahead

If you’ve ever had the chance to read ahead about the next topic in advance, you know how much easier it feels in class when the teacher starts to explain a new topic. It also reduces your stress by preparing helping you feel ahead and allowing you to absorb more detail during the lesson, as well as helping you get ready for upcoming assessments.

5. Join Extracurricular Activities

These could include debating, chess, coding, arts and crafts, choir, drama, music or sporting activities. Whatever you choose to do, just ensure that you will enjoy it. Being involved in extracurricular activities actually helps students stay engaged in their schooling as well as improving their communication and social relationships.

6. Reward Yourself

Make sure you reward yourself for achieving a goal or excelling in an assignment or assessment. This will boost your motivation to perform to the best of your ability.

7. Ask Your Friends For Help

Group study is a great option for many people. When you study with a group, you feel more motivated as you and your peers tackle challenges together. Besides, group work can help you see material from a different perspective and explaining a concept to a fellow student is a great way to deepen your understanding of the topic.

8. Focus On Your Goals

First, you have to know and clearly define to yourself what you really want to achieve. Is it just to get a good grade in a particular exam? Is it to be the top student in your cohort? Whatever your goal is, keep it in focus and remind yourself of it whenever things seem too difficult to handle – people who set specific and challenging goals for themselves tend to perform better.
